“Half-timbered” architecture is a process in which core structural framing and fill is plainly exposed on the outside and inside of the structure. Half-Timbered uses this interior and exterior exposure as a metaphor for the larger debate on public public vs. private and exposure vs. secrecy. Through committing small invasions of privacy, Half-Timbered reveals moments of intimacy not intended for a viewing audience. Not unlike government spy programs, these seemingly private moments, whether they be mundane or profound, are used to profile and build personal and collective narratives. Half-Timbered explores instances when personal space becomes subject to public scrutiny.
Half-Timbered is inspired by the United States National Security Agency’s PRISM and Dropout Jeep surveillance programs which enables a cunning government over-reach in violation of our privacy.
